Nailah Amaru

Na’ilah Amaru is an advocacy and policy strategist with 15+ years’ experience operating in visible and highly-demanding positions in both the non-profit and government arenas. A mission-driven leader with a diverse network, Na’ilah has a vast interdisciplinary background with particular expertise in campaign planning, issue advocacy, narrative development and coalition-building at the local, state, and national levels. With intense curiosity, relentless tenacity, and a deep personal commitment to civic leadership and community engagement, Na’ilah builds bridges between government, non-profits, and everyday people. In roles ranging from grassroots organizer in Georgia, to legislative staffer on Capitol Hill, to managing NYC’s largest political caucus, Na’ilah uniquely understands how to maneuver an ever-changing political landscape, build consensus, and transform ideas into public policy.


Na'ilah is also a distinguished Army veteran and ammunition specialist who has served in Iraq and was awarded an Army Commendation Medal for exemplary service. Currently, she is an Adjunct Professor at the Harry van Arsdale Jr. Center for Labor Studies at SUNY Empire State College, where she teaches Municipal Government and Public Policy. She is also a workshop facilitator on issues of leadership development and a strategic planning consultant to community-based non-profits.
